Google Sitemaps Tools

NetSmarter @ 2005-06-22 12:12  (Tools and Books)

I've been trying to use the Google Sitemaps today. First I tried to install the scripts recommanded by Google but found it was kinda too complicated and gave it up (also because it needs to be run from the command line and I don't have SSH access to some of my website servers). Then I started reading postings in the Google Sitemaps Group, trying to find some easy-to-use 3rd party tools to create the sitemap for me. I found a couple of them so far:

* VIGOS Gsitemap: window based software. free download.

* http://www.resourceseo.com/sitemaps.php: a free on-line tool.

Search Engines penalize duplicate content

NetSmarter @ 2005-06-21 15:12  (Web Traffic and SEO)

I have read some articles regarding SEO and duplicate web contents. It seems like search enginese, espeically Google, will penalizes pages for having duplicate contents on it. The duplicate contents might come from other websites. Because Google keeps a large database of websites and it has smart algorithm, it can detect duplicate contents and penalize the pages.

So I guess to avoid being penalize, you should make sure your contents are not duplicates from other sites. Also make sure your pages are not dupliated from each other (make each pages at least 5-7% different from other pages on the same site).

There's a website called CopyScape.com (http://www.copyscape.com) that can help you the check duplication.

eBook Review: Google AdWords 123

NetSmarter @ 2005-06-12 10:40  (Tools and Books)

There are a few eBooks on Google Adwords on the market, but I found Google AdWords 123 (by Greg Heslin) is really worth reading.

I bought this book online and finished reading it in half day. I think and key strength of Google AdWords 123 is that the author has taken a non-BS step-by-step approach in writing this book. The steps are very clear and well-organized such that everybody can easily get started by following the steps.

Beginners will benefit from this book because Grey Heslin has written a good introduction on what affiliate marketing is and how it works. If you are brand new at affiliate marketing, this book can get you started easily. On the other hand, book has also gone into great details talking about all aspecets of seting up PPC campaign such as how to choose keywords, how to write ad contents, how to monitor your campaigns etc. For people like me who have already been doing adwords, this book is full of good advices and helpful tips.

Many of us have known that staring early 2005 Google changed their Adwords policy so that it only allows one unique web page per keywords search term. Google AdWords 123 has addressed this issue and the author has presented a method to get around this problem.

I think one of the main reasons this book is valuable is because the author is from the marketing background; unlike other gurus, his approaches and steps are backed by valuable marketing theories. When you read this book, you will find a key approach he has taken that distinguish him from other Adwords marketers.

Overrall, I feel that Google AdWords 123 is a well-written ebook and I think it's the best ebook on Google Adwords that I have read so far.

Google Sitemaps

NetSmarter @ 2005-06-03 12:13  (Tools and Books)

Google recently launched a new program called Google Sitemaps. This program (free, currently still in Beta) is designed to help website owners to get their website pages get crawled by google.

If you want to take advantage of Google Sitemaps, you need to place a Sitemap-formatted file on your webserver. By doing so you enable Google's crawlers to find out what pages are present and which have recently changed, and to crawl your site accordingly. Google Sitemaps can help to get more of your web pages crawled and can also enable you to tell Google when contents on your site changes.

This sounds pretty good. However, the problem I see is that in order to get started, you have to install some scripts on your sever. Webmasters "should have knowledge of uploading files to their webserver, connecting to their webserver, and running scripts. In addition, Python version 2.2 must be installed on your webserver - check with your web hosting company if you are unsure". Bottom line: you have to be a technical guy or have a technical guy to help you in order to take advantage of Google Sitemaps. To make people's life easier, Google also says "If any of these requirements are not met, you can still submit a Sitemap to the Google Sitemaps program in simple text format.".

Here is Google Sitemaps' FAQ.

Website owners should take advantage of Google Sitemaps to get better seach engine visability.
